Unveiling of Ceramic Tile Mural in Gardenside Park

Unveiling of Ceramic Tile Mural in Gardenside Park

A new piece of public art has been installed in Gardenside Park, and its official unveiling will take place on Tuesday, August 8 at 6pm. Dunbar High School art students created ceramic tiles depicting native plants under the direction of their teacher Deborah Eller and retired art teacher Elise Melrood, both Gardenside residents. Together the tiles form a colorful 4 foot by 8 foot mural.

The project is part of an LFUCG 2017 Stormwater Quality Incentive Grant. The purpose is to increase awareness of how native plants help to improve water quality. Since 2014, Gardenside Neighborhood Association has been working to establish a stream buffer along the creek in Gardenside Park, planting native trees, shrubs, and flowers such as tulip poplar, spicebush and asters. The stream buffer prevents erosion, filters stormwater to prevent pollutants from entering the stream, and provides food and habitat for pollinators and for birds, frogs and salamanders that help to control mosquitos. The stream that runs through the park is part of the Wolf Run Watershed that feeds Town Branch and eventually the Kentucky River.

The public is invited to the unveiling of the native plant mural on Tuesday, August 8 at 6pm in Gardenside Park, 1835 Yorktown Road, to meet the students who created this new piece of public art.

YMCA Back to School Rally

YMCA Back to School Rally

Each year, the YMCA of Central Kentucky, in partnership with Fayette County Public Schools, sponsors and community partners, hosts the annual Neighborhood Back to School Rallies.

The rallies provide elementary, middle and high school students with free back packs and school supplies. Each neighborhood distributes supplies for all grade levels. The Back to School Rallies is an initiative of the Y, which has served as the central coordinator of this event since 2011. Since that time, more than 35,000 children have been served.

This year's event will be held on Saturday, Aug. 5, 2017.

Thanks to the generosity of our 2017 sponsors and partners: Fayette County Public Schools, Kentucky Utilities, Anthem BlueCross BlueShield, Anthem BlueCross BlueShield Medicaid, Hilliard-Lyons, United Way of the Bluegrass, PNC Bank, Rotary Club of Lexington, Passport Health Plan and WLEX-TV.

Each neighborhood solicits its own grassroots support and plans its own food and activities.

The goal of this initiative is to prepare children for school and to unify our neighborhoods for even greater self-advocacy and community planning. Neighborhoods build bridges with schools, churches and local businesses by establishing relationships that they can utilize in the future for a variety of purposes.

Schedule of events:
